“There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: But the tongue of the wise is health" (Proverbs 12:18).

Today's Daily devotional will focus on waking up and being mindful of our words. I had a conversation with a friend whom I met at work and with whom I have remained close since our first day sharing an office. As time has passed, we have both grown older and naturally, our perspectives on life have evolved. One significant difference between us is that my friend does not know Jesus as Lord, which has influenced his outlook on life. After not speaking for a while, I noticed that he sounded down, discouraged, and depressed. This reminded me of the wise words of King Solomon, who wrote, “There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: But the tongue of the wise is health" (Proverbs 12:18).

Indeed, words of wisdom can heal a wounded heart and many years ago I prayed and asked God for wisdom. As stated in James 1:5, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” God is generous in granting wisdom to all who seek it and He is no respecter of persons.

During my conversation with my friend, he expressed feelings of aging and forgetfulness, repeatedly affirming that he was old and unable to remember things. I felt compelled to advise him against speaking such negative declarations over himself. I shared a personal experience where someone dear to me discovered a spot on their lungs and immediately began referring to it as cancer. Sadly, within a few weeks, that diagnosis became a reality. Less than a year later, I found him deceased in his wheelchair. This serves as a reminder of the power our words hold and the importance of speaking life and positivity into our circumstances.

I'm grateful to know that he's with the Lord, but we should never speak things into the atmosphere that are not prosperous for us. Do you realize that Jesus Christ spoke everything into existence? “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air” (Genesis 1:26). God spoke it, and we have the power to speak negative things over ourselves. “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he" (Proverbs 23:7). What are your thoughts?
