Today's Daily devotional will focus on the subject of understanding the significance of Halloween. Halloween has been a controversial holiday for many years, with the Church sometimes offering conflicting opinions on its observance. However, some churches do not endorse Halloween, and it is important to understand why. I acknowledge that this is a sensitive topic, but it is crucial to remember that “the truth shall make you free” (John‬ ‭8‬:‭32‬).

In studying the history of Halloween, it is important to note that it originally began as a celebration of Samhain, the lord of death and evil spirits, and the harvest. The Celtic priests, known as Druids, observed this occasion by offering sacrifices of animals and crops to Samhain. As the cold winter season approached, it was believed that on the evening of October 31, the souls of the deceased would rise from their graves and wander the earthly realm. It was also believed that these lost souls would be permitted to visit their former homes and interact with the living.

The Druids indeed conducted worship ceremonies during Samhain, using various animals such as black sheep, cats, horses, and unfortunately, even human beings as offerings. These sacrifices were placed inside wicker cages and burned alive. The purpose behind these sacrifices was to appease Samhain and prevent evil souls and spirits from causing harm to the living. To obtain these sacrifices, Druid priests and others would go from house to house, requesting animals and even human beings as offerings. Those who willingly provided these sacrifices were promised prosperity, while those who refused were often cursed and threatened.

The tradition of offering treats to wandering spirits or demons during Halloween originated from the belief that providing them with food would prevent them from playing tricks or cursing people. Over time, this practice evolved, and candy became the replacement for the previous human sacrifices. Thus, the phrase "trick or treat" became associated with Halloween. Wake up it is important to recognize that when we give out Halloween candy, we are actually offering sacrifices to a false god.

That is idolatry! By the way, this night is equivalent to New Year’s Eve because the following day is the witch's new year! A wicker whom I became friendly with years ago advised me “This is high time for us and the most important holiday of the year.” The Apostle Paul says “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them” (Ephesians 5:11). What are your thoughts?
