The Temptation to Not Keep Your Word

Far too many people make promises and commitments that they do not keep.

For the entire month of August Powerzone ministries will be diving deep into the topic of temptation. What exactly is temptation? We'll be exploring what it means and what the Bible has to say about it all Month long!

The Bible says, "Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge" (Hebrews 13:4).

Today, our daily devotional study will focus on the temptation to not keep your word. I must admit that this is a personal favorite topic of mine. Far too many people make promises and commitments that they do not keep. Some people simply talk for the sake of talking, while others are sincere when making commitments. I can certainly begin this study by pointing out the many marriages where people have entered into sacred vows and later broken them. I would like to believe that most individuals who take marital vows do not expect to break them. However, there are instances where at least one person never intended to keep their word when making those vows. The Bible says, "Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge" (Hebrews 13:4).

In other words, the only relationship that God sanctions for sexual intimacy, including intercourse, is between a man and a woman who are married to each other. In this intimate act, the only participant is God Himself. Unfortunately, some people view marriage as a venture that can be tried out, similar to trying on a pair of shoes. Initially, the shoes may look good, but they may not feel as good as they look once you truly get intimate with them, if you understand the metaphor. After this test, some people may desire to try on different shoes, seeking new experiences.

True love makes you compatible with the person the Lord has joined you with, and there is no need to test-drive a partner. Does God not know everything about us? Yes, the Lord knows what and who we need to share our lives with, and we should not break that covenant when tempted. The sweet psalmist and great king David says, "O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off" (Psalm 139:1-2). What are your thoughts?
