Nehemiah 8:10, "for the joy of the Lord is our strength."

November 14, 2023 By Dr. George Bing

In today’s Daily Devotional, we will continue our discussion on giving thanksgiving to the Lord through songs and specifically with our voices. Yesterday we began our discussion on thanksgiving to God using our voices. It was established that everyone is not gifted to sing and so we are aware that some people have the ability to sing with more pleasant voices than others. Perhaps you are a person who does not believe that you can sing.

It is true that very few individuals possess the exceptional singing abilities of Mahalia Jackson or Aretha Franklin. However, everyone has the capability to sing to some extent, especially when guided by the anointing. It is important to remember that if you struggle with staying on pitch, it can be helpful to stand near someone who can carry a tune and softly follow their lead. As the psalmist and great king of Israel, David, expressed in Psalm 100:1-2, "Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing."

The Scripture does not specify that only those with pleasant voices should sing. The invitation to "all ye lands" implies that people from all over the world are called to sing to the Lord. We are encouraged to sing with joy, as it is our strength, as stated in Nehemiah 8:10, "for the joy of the Lord is our strength." Joy is an internal feeling that can be overwhelming and lead to a strong desire to sing with enthusiasm.

Many individuals may not naturally possess a good singing voice, but the Holy Spirit has the ability to align and harmonize our voices if we allow Him to work in us. Praise be to the Lamb of God! The Apostle Paul instructs us in Ephesians 5:18-20, “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” What are your thoughts?
