In today's Daily devotional, we will be continuing our exploration of Thanksgiving Day. This significant day is dedicated to commemorating the initial Thanksgiving celebration held by the Pilgrims in the United States. It was during this occasion that they celebrated their first successful corn harvest. The feast, which took place in Plymouth, lasted for three days and is believed to have been attended by around 90 Native Americans from the Wampanoag Tribe, alongside approximately 53 colonists known as Pilgrims.

President Abraham Lincoln officially declared Thanksgiving a national holiday on October 3, 1863, intending to foster healing in a divided nation. It is worth noting that wild turkeys are considered native birds of the United States. Interestingly, one of the Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklin, advocated for the turkey to be the national bird of the United States, arguing that it was more fitting than the bald eagle. In the words of the Apostle Paul, “For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer” (I Timothy 4:4-5).

It is believed that the tradition of saying grace before meals originates from the passage mentioned. It is important to pray and express gratitude to the Lord before partaking in any meal, whether it be at home or in a public setting. This act serves as a way to acknowledge the Lord's sovereignty and to seek His blessing upon every morsel of food we consume. During Thanksgiving meals, it is common for individuals who may not typically pray before meals to join in this practice.

Thanksgiving serves as a powerful reminder of God's goodness, even during loss and the absence of loved ones. We can still be grateful for the time we were blessed to have them in our lives. Amen. As stated in Ephesians 5:20, “giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;” What are your thoughts?
