"A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior. Given to hospitality, apt to teach” II Timothy 3:2

June 12, 2023 By Dr. George Bing

On this day ten years ago I was consecrated to the office of Bishop. I was humbled to even be considered to carry such an office and honored to carry the Truth. Truth be told a person who is considered to be appointed to the office of Bishop is supposed to have a good report from without. "Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and snare of the devil.” I Timothy 3:7. Because of the concern of a person elected to this office to cause a disgrace to it; part of the criteria to hold the office was to have a good report from people outside of the Church.

Everyone who has been considered for this office had a life before being considered for the position. There are several reasons why the organization consecrating the Pastor does not want embarrassment in the event they fall. If they have a bad reputation outside of the Church it would be a bad reflection on the organization. It would look like the organization did not do a thorough investigation before consecrating this person. But the most principal reason is that a Bishop is not ordained because he already has been to the office of Elder.

Once a Bishop is consecrated this is the highest office that can be held in any organization and it can never be rescinded! This is why it is vital to do a thorough investigation of any man’s life before considering consecrating them. A bishop is an overseer of more than one assembly of Believers and their word carries a lot of weight. They should not only carry the Truth, but their lives should reflect the Truth as well. “A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior. Given to hospitality, apt to teach” II Timothy 3:2. What are your thoughts?
