Simon Says

Let God be true, but every man a liar!

For the entire month of June, the Powerzone Ministries' daily devotionals will focus on The Truth. You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. Does the truth set you free or make you free? Learn the difference by following and reading this month's devotionals.

“And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.” Acts 8:11.

As kids most of us probably played a game called "Simon says". The rules were simple - the person playing Simon would give commands, but the command had to be preceded by the phrase "Simon says." If you followed the command without hearing "Simon says" first, you would be eliminated from the game. The goal of the game was for Simon to try and eliminate all the other players by giving commands that they would follow without hearing "Simon says" first. It was a fun way to test our listening skills and ability to follow instructions. To be victorious in this game you needed to be disciplined (quick to hear) and focused on the motive of the person instructing you. Are they sincere or trying to deceive me?

There is a story in the Bible about a man named Simon. This man was sorcery, defined as a person who uses witchcraft and fortune telling which is influenced by demonic forces, and done for money. He was very popular in Samaria and it was believed that he had great power. Speaking of “Simon says", the Bible says, “And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.” Acts 8:11.

The Evangelist Phillip came to Samaria and many people believed his message about Jesus Christ and were baptized. The Bible says "Then Simon himself believed also; and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip." Acts 8:13. This man became a believer, but did he carry the genuine power of the Holy Ghost? We shall see if we can give credence to this tomorrow. "For what if some did not believe? Shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar.” Romans 3:3-4. What are your thoughts?
