"And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin," (John 16:8).

In this world, there are moments when fear should be in our hearts, and it's important to acknowledge that. Yes, I said it! Unfortunate circumstances are bound to cross our paths. When we consciously choose to partake in actions that we know are morally wrong, the weight of shame becomes ever-present. Take, for example, the initial act of theft often leaves a person overwhelmed with guilt. Similarly, those who engage in extramarital affairs for the first time often experience a profound sense of remorse. Even a gangster, when pulling the trigger for the very first time, is likely to grapple with the haunting feeling of shame. However, after the first time, as subsequent opportunities arise, the act becomes easier to repeat with little or no remorse.

Do you recall the character Charles Bronson portrayed in the film Death Wish? Driven by a deep sense of justification, he took matters into his own hands and pursued the criminals that attacked his family. His wife had fallen victim to their brutality, and his daughter had suffered a horrific assault at their hands. Consumed by a desire for retribution, he was resolute in seeking justice. However, when he fired upon the thugs for the first time, an overwhelming wave of guilt washed over him, causing him to physically react by regurgitating. This visceral response stemmed from the moral conflict he experienced while carrying out his vengeful act. "And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin," (John 16:8).

The first work of the Holy Spirit is to empower and enable us to do right when we stumble. However, it begs the question: why should those who engage in ungodly deeds be fearful? This passage provides a compelling answer to anyone who refuses to honor their promises to the Lord. You may have considered it a mere saying rather than a biblical truth, but the Lord Himself confirms it in Numbers 32:23, stating, "But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the Lord: and be sure your sin will find you out." What are your thoughts?
