Mary McLeod Bethune: A Great Civil Rights Leader and an American Educator

Never Give Up on Your Dreams!

For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods. 1Chronicles 16:25

For the entire month of February, the Powerzone Ministries' daily devotionals will focus on the topic of #HOPE. The Bible says "hope deferred maketh the heart sick." What does that mean? The world oftentimes speaks of hope as wishful thinking, is this the same hope the bible teaches? Stay connected to learn more.

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1

Hope February 17, 2023 By Dr. George Bing

Everybody needs something or someone to believe in. Every one of us has dreams, but some people have allowed others to crush them. They've allowed their circumstances to have a negative effect on pursuing their destiny. Some people will blame their unfortunate past and disappointments on why they've lost their heart. I love what the famous Christian Coach Tony Dungy said: I knew that people from a different ethnic group had better books, supplies, and opportunities to get assistance, but it encouraged me to work harder. It's all about perspective!

Mary McLeod Bethune was a great Civil rights leader and an American educator. She was the 15th of 17 children. Her two dreams were to learn how to read and live in a house with windows. She prayed and asked the Lord to bless her to be able to go to High school. A lady living in Colorado read in a Presbyterian magazine about young African American girls needing a sponsor of $45 per year to attend High school. Mary was chosen to be sponsored by her. Mary with hope in her heart went on to attend Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 1894. She desired to be a Missionary and to work in Africa. She received a letter of refusal from the Institute. It could've shut her down!

Faith would have it that Mary would meet DL Moody the founder of the Institute. It's believed that he encouraged her to go south where she began a small Missions school because she saw how education had transformed her life. She would later work with President Franklin D Roosevelt and eventually move down to Daytona. This is where the renowned Bethune Cookman College was officially established. Never give up on your dreams. Never let anyone or anything stop you. Keep the vision before you, as Mary McLeod Bethune did! Praise God! The Bible says "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1. What are your thoughts?
