“God forbid: yea, Let God be true, but every man a liar.” Romans 3:4

June 30, 2023 By Dr. George Bing

Most of us know Abraham as the father of faith in which he was. God knew Abraham’s heart and called him and gave him an assignment that would have him separate from all the comforts that he was accustomed to. The Bible says “Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee” Genesis 12:1. This is one reason that Abram whose name was changed to Abraham was called the father of faith. The name Abraham means “Father of many nations” and he would become just that because through him all nations would be blessed. And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” Genesis 12:3.

The other reason is the story of when Abraham took his only promised son up to Mount Moriah and was willing to sacrifice him to the Lord. “And Abraham stretched forth his hand and took the knife to slay his son. And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here I am.” Genesis 22:10-11. If God had not stopped him he would have used his son as a sacrifice. But there is an incident in Abraham’s life, that he did not exhibit great faith. When he and his beautiful wife Sarah encountered a famine on their journey to the Promised Land; there was a famine in the land, and so they had to go down to Egypt. Because of her beauty, Abraham believed that Sarah would be sent to Pharoah the king’s house.

Abraham feared for his life because believed that the king would want to get rid of him so that Sarah would become a part of his harem. Abraham deceived Pharoah by saying that his wife was his sister. Pharoah called Abram and asked him “Why saidist thou, She is my sister? Truth be told Sarah, known as Sarai at the time was indeed Abram’s sister. They had the same father, but different mothers. But obviously, the more significant relationship is spousal. Abraham knew that saying that Sarai was his sister was deceptive. Lying is bad, but deception is worse because it offers enough truth to lead someone to draw a wrong conclusion. “God forbid: yea, Let God be true, but every man a liar.” Romans 3:4.
