Love is a Word That is Used Much Too Lightly!

Love is a word that is used much too lightly. Many people say I love you in passing, but do they really mean it? You can have a strong attraction for someone, but it doesn't mean you love them. Love is giving to a person to meet their needs, and lust is about your needs being met with no concern for the person. That's selfishness! There are four loves in the Bible. In the English language, we use one word for love. We differentiate the type of love by the context of the sentence.

An example that I often use is the word bag. The bag is spelled the same but has a different meaning contingent upon the context of the sentence. My mother use to call her close friends an old bag. An old bag technically means a middle-aged homely woman. Now you had to be a good friend for mommy to call you an old bag.”A friend loveth at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.” Proverbs 17:17. When I was in JHS I heard people use the word bag in diverse ways. "That's not my bag." "What's in the bag?"' Bring your own brown bag." I know; what can brown do for you? Let's not forget " Let me get a nickel bag." Naughty, naughty! This is different from "John Cofee," like the drink, but it's spelled the same!

In other words, love has the same spelling, but has different meanings in the Bible. "Now abideth faith, hope, and charity, these three, but the greatest of these is charity," which is Love! I Corinthians 13:13. More on this subject tomorrow. What are your thoughts?

For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods. 1Chronicles 16:25

“But God commendeth His Love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Roman 5:8

Love December 8, 2022 By Dr. George Bing

If you were sinking in quicksand, the more you tried to save yourself, the quicker you would sink. That is a time that you need someone else to pull you out. You need someone who has the expertise in delivering you. The ability to save you by risking their own lives to do it. “But God commendeth His Love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Roman 5:8.

God demonstrated what Love is by creating a body of flesh for His Son to walk in here on earth. Jesus was the perfect example of what Love is and what Love does! Too many leaders say "do as I say, and not as I do." But Jesus can truly say, do as I say and as I do. Jesus, Himself said, “Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” I Peter 1:16. Our love for one another should be to that degree. We should be willing to lay our lives down for others, especially if that person was lost. The Bible says" esteem others better than yourselves."

I read a story years ago about a little boy who agreed to give his sister a blood transfusion to save her life. The intriguing thing about this true story is that the boy who was only 5 years old thought that he would have to die in her place, and was willing to do it! After the transfusion, this little boy looked at his sister smiling and then looked sadly at the doctor and inquired when was he going to die. What better way than to do as Jesus did, by sacrificing your own life for someone else's? “Hereby perceive we the love of God, who laid down His life for us: we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren." 1 John 3:16.
