Is Tithing Still Necessary?

It is important to understand the significance of tithing and to do so truthfully and correctly.

For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods. 1Chronicles 16:25

For the entire month of June, the Powerzone Ministries' daily devotionals will focus on The Truth. You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. Does the truth set you free or make you free? Learn the difference by following and reading this month's devotionals.

Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe.” Numbers 18:26

If you've ever attended a Church, you're likely familiar with the concept of Tithing. However, there's been some disagreement within the Church about whether Tithing is still necessary in the new Dispensation. While I won't weigh in on that debate, I will say that Jesus himself supported the practice of Tithing. In fact, he admonished the scribes and Pharisees for neglecting other important aspects of the law while still paying their Tithes. As He said in Matthew 23:23 “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.”

In his teachings, Jesus emphasizes the importance of tithing while also cautioning against neglecting other crucial aspects of the law. He shares a parable about a Pharisee and a Publican who were both praying in the temple. The Pharisee boasted about his adherence to the law, including his faithful tithing. However, Jesus reminds us that true righteousness involves more than just tithing. Jesus telling the parable says “The Pharisee stood apart by himself and prayed, I thank you, God, that I am not greedy, dishonest, or an adulterer, like everybody else. I thank you that I am not like that tax collector over there. I fast two days a week, and I give you a tenth of all my income.” Luke 18:11-12.

Despite the Pharisee's self-righteousness and judgmental attitude, Jesus does not condemn him for tithing. However, it is important to note that some people may tithe incorrectly, believing that a percentage less than ten percent is sufficient. The word "tithe" means a tenth part, and this is the amount that should be given. The reason for this specific percentage will be explained tomorrow. “Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe.” Numbers 18:26. It is important to understand the significance of tithing and to do so truthfully and correctly. What are your thoughts?
