James 1:14 reminds us "But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed."

June 25, 2023 By Dr. George Bing

Have you ever read the story of Balak and Balaam in the Book of Numbers? It recounts the story of Balak, the king of Moab, who felt threatened by the Israelites after they had defeated the Amorites. The Israelites had now entered Moabite territory, and Balak was desperate to rid himself of them. He sought the help of Balaam, a well-known sorcerer, and prophet who was notorious for placing curses on people. Balaam was a corrupt individual who worshipped various gods, including Yahweh, whom he had some knowledge of but was not entirely loyal to. His heart was consumed with lust for wealth, which drove him to make decisions. The Bible states, "No man can serve two masters: For either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold on to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon." (Matthew 6:24).

Mammon, indeed refers to money, and it is not inherently evil. However, the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, as stated in I Timothy 6:10 "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows." The lust for wealth has led many people astray from their faith, causing broken relationships, marriages, and losses from legitimate sources of income. It is a force that has brought sorrow to many. As for Balaam, did he curse the Israelites for the money that Balak offered him, or did divine intervention prevent him from doing so? This is a question that we will explore tomorrow. James 1:14 reminds us "But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed." What are your thoughts?
