One of the wealthiest men to ever live was a man named Howard Hughes. He was a billionaire and yet he was somewhat of a miserable person. Today in our Daily devotional we will be discussing two conditions that people battle with as we continue listing the ten most known phobias. The first phobia we encounter is known as Mysophobia, an overwhelming fear of dirt and germs. Hughes, throughout a significant portion of his life, battled with this debilitating condition.

Tragically, his struggle with Mysophobia ultimately led him down a path of isolation and seclusion, resulting in his demise as a recluse. It was peculiar to witness him perpetually donning a mask, even in the absence of any threat posed by Covid. This eccentric behavior left many perplexed and questioning his sanity. In the words of the wise writer, "A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: And there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother." (Proverbs 18:24) This verse reminds us of the importance of cultivating meaningful connections with others.

Astraphobia is the fear of storms. I heard a story about a little boy who was afraid to sleep by himself because of the loud thunder and lightning that came with a storm outside of his house. Now terrified, he asked his mother if she would come into his room and sleep with him until the storm ended. The little boy’s mother responded by advising him, “Honey, I have to sleep in the bed with your daddy.” The little boy's response was, “The big sissy!”

Fear can cause you to lose respect and have an improper perspective in life. It can also make you see the speck in someone else's eye. A speck is a small splinter, and in life, we tend to notice other people’s minor indiscretions, if any, while ignoring the two-by-four major issues in our own eyes. Fear can lead us to do that. "And why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?" (Matthew 7:3). What are your thoughts?
