“For God commanded saying, Honour thy father and mother: and He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.” Matthew 15:4

Honor: October 5, 2022 By Dr. George Bing

Obeying your parents is different from honoring them. This is enlightenment for some people. To obey falls under the umbrella of the household. If you are still living under your parent’s roof, you're obligated to obey the regulations of their home. In turn, you are to obey your parents.” Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.” Ephesians 6:1

You're an adult now and no longer living under your parent’s roof. Honoring your parents doesn't require you to obey them. If one of your parents wants to perform an act that offends God; you do not have to agree with it. Your top priority is to obey God. “Then Peter and the other Apostles answered and said, we ought to obey God rather than men.” Acts 5:29

So how do you honor your parents without dishonoring God? There's respect that you must have for your parents when speaking to them. Even when they're out of order; you never talk to them as if they're your child. You correct them with the utmost respect because you are honoring their position. You may be a Republican or a Democrat, but regardless of who is in office: we are always supposed to respect the position they hold. We may not agree with their policies, but we must honor the position that they hold.

When a judge walks into the Courtroom everyone comes to their feet rather, they like the judge or not. You are honoring their position of authority. It's always a great practice to consult God for wisdom in how to address your parents without disrespecting, but honoring them. “For God commanded saying, Honour thy father and mother: and He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.” Matthew 15:4.
