Honoring Our Words in Marriage

How can I do such an immoral thing and sin against God?

For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods. 1Chronicles 16:25

The Bible says “Wives submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.” Ephesians 5:23

We are continuing on yesterday’s subject about honoring our words in marriage. Remember when Potiphar’s wife was persistent in trying to get Joseph to sleep with her? He continually refused because he was married and she was as well. Joseph respected that and he reminded her that Potiphar had entrusted him with everything in their home, and he understood the boundaries concerning another man’s wife. “And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand” Genesis 39:7-8.

In layman’s terms, Potiphar greatly trusted Joseph. Joseph told Potiphar’s wife that he would not only be offending his master Potiphar and perhaps his own wife, but above all he would be offending God if he laid with her. Joseph said “I have as much authority in this house as he has, and he has not kept back anything from me except you. How can I do such an immoral thing and sin against God?" Genesis 39:9. This was about the authority given to him by Potiphar who trusted him to handle all of his affairs and the business of the home. He had no authority over Potiphar’s wife. The Bible says “Wives submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.” Ephesians 5:23.

In other words, wives are to submit themselves unto their own husbands the same way that the Church submits to the authority of Christ. Wives should submit to their own husbands and not to anyone else’s husbands. Only your husband has that authority and even then it is not to be abused by instructing our wives to do something outside of the boundaries of the Word. The Word is the Truth, and in marriage, it must be adhered to if you want a marriage like heaven on earth. God intended marriage to be a picture of how He loves us! “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ loved the Church, and gave Himself for it” Ephesians 5:25. What are your thoughts?
