Joy January 3, 2023 By Dr. George Bing

If there was one word to describe what joy is, it would be the word delight. A person delighted is upbeat. Things may not necessarily be going the way you desire them to go at the moment, but you're upbeat. Life may not be perfect, but you're upbeat. You may have gotten some unpleasant or disturbing news, but you're still upbeat. Remember Akeem in "Coming to America" when he went to work at McDowell's? Lisa's father (James from Good Times) was giving Akeem instructions about cleaning up the restaurant and having him do other unpleasant duties.

Akeem was just grinning from ear to ear. Even insults such as came from his friend Semmi “Are you going to sweep your way into her arms?” didn’t bother him. Why? Though it's a fictitious character, he was content where he was in life. Regardless of what his task was, he was free in his new life and he refused to let circumstances control his attitude. He also realized that he had been provided with a great opportunity to befriend someone precious, and perfect for him. He may not have been aware of what the Bible says but the Scripture says "Delight thyself also in the Lord, and He will give thee the desires of thine heart." Psalms 37:4.

When you discover what the Lord Jesus has already done for you, it becomes a joy to be able to serve Him. When you realize that He's walking with you every day; even though things may not be perfect, the assurance that He's with you is where the joy comes from. It's a peace that's beyond the world's understanding. What a joy to know that you can now and continually be “Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you! I Peter 5:7. What are your thoughts?
