The Bible says, "But be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves" (James 1:22)

July 12, 2023 By Dr. George Bing

Today, we will conclude our Daily Devotional discussion about the fear of the Word not being received by its hearers. We have highlighted several men of God in the Bible in past Daily Devotionals who were concerned about not being well received. Among them were Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Timothy, the young protégé of the Apostle Paul. At least two of them were concerned about being received due to their youth or lack of experience. However, this concern should not serve as a distraction or an excuse for disregarding instructions given by someone who is young or lacks experience. The Word stands on its own, and everyone is obligated to adhere to it.

The Bible says, "But be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves" (James 1:22). We are called upon to put the Word into practice, and this applies to both the one delivering it and the ones receiving it. The Apostle Paul expressed concern about some believers in the Church in Ephesus, and he addressed it to Timothy, saying, "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears" (II Timothy 4:3).

The question posed yesterday is, "Why do some people not like the unadulterated Word of God and would rather hear words that cater to their fleshly desires?" What is the reason? I suspect because people have been following their own lustful desires and church-hopping until they find a ministry where the Word is watered-down. This doctrine, which the Apostle says appeals to itching ears, condones their lifestyles because people with itching ears do not want to adhere to the pure and sincere Word of God that does not satisfy the flesh. These people are fearful of trusting God's Word! "And they shall turn away their ears from the Truth, and shall be turned unto fables" (II Timothy 4:4). What are your thoughts?
