All Souls Day

There is only one of two places where each of us will be judged by God if Jesus tarries.

In this special edition daily devotional, we invite you to embrace the spirit of Thanksgiving and cultivate a heart overflowing with gratitude towards the Lord.

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad” (II Corinthians 5:10).

In today's Daily Devotional, we will be discussing the observance of "All Souls Day" in the Catholic faith. This day is dedicated to praying for the deceased, particularly those believed to be in purgatory. We acknowledge that this is a sensitive topic, and our intention is not to offend anyone. It is important to note that the perspective I am sharing is based on biblical teachings. The Bible states in Hebrews 9:27, "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment."

There is only one of two places where each of us will be judged by God if Jesus tarries. All believers will go before the Judgment Seat of Christ to be judged. The Apostle Paul says “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad” (II Corinthians 5:10).

We as Believers are grateful to the Lord and thank Him for giving us eternal life with Him, but we still have to give account and be judged for how we lived. Unbelievers will be judged at the Great White Throne judgment. The Apostle John says “And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them” (Revelation 20:11).

This is where unbelievers will be judged for how they lived here on earth. Luke 16 Jesus shares the story about the rich man and Lazarus who was a poor beggar in this world before he passed. This story is specifically about greed and hypocrisy and it depicts the fact that when a person dies they will have a memory of things they’ve done on earth. They also will have an identity and it is obviously clear according to the story that people on Earth cannot pray you out of hell or into heaven.

What we are beyond thankful for is that as Believers we will not have to suffer the consequences of not receiving Jesus Christ as Lord. The Apostle John concludes “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works” (Revelation 20:12). What are your thoughts?
