“Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another” Romans 12

June 7, 2023 By Dr. George Bing

In the world where we currently reside our paths have and most likely will cross many other people in the world’s paths. We will meet many people but only a select few will become our friends. Sadly, in this world, we will come across people who are not what they portray themselves to be. People befriend others for different reasons. Some people have hidden agendas and will befriend others with a plan on how they can benefit from the relationship. Others befriend a particular person because they see a person who is vulnerable at the time and they take advantage of them. But then there are people in the world that just have a love for people and simply just want to be a friend.

A friend is a person that you bond with and have mutual affection for. This develops over time and true friends will be there for one another, especially in the darkest of times. The Bible says “A friend loveth at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.” Proverbs 17:17. In other words, the truth be told the true brother especially in Christ is in your life or you in theirs to be there in times of trouble. This is a love in the Bible that is called the Phileo love which derives from the word Philadelphia which is where we get the City here in the United States with the same name. “Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another” Romans 12:10.

The word Philadelphia means brotherly love like the city that uses the name. A true friend will be affectionate and be a support to the person who needs a confidant or listening ear that is needed especially during the most difficult of times in life. The wise writer King Solomon says “ A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: And there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:24. The truth and that’s Jesus Christ! What are your thoughts?
